About Finasteride

Finasteride is used to treat men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and male pattern hair loss, also called androgenetic alopecia. BPH is caused by an enlarged prostate. Men with BPH usually have difficulty urinating, a decreased flow of urination, hesitation at the beginning of urination, and a need to get up at night to urinate. Finasteride will make these symptoms less severe and reduce the chance that prostate surgery will be needed. It may be used alone or in combination with other medicines such as an alpha-blocker to treat BPH. For men with hair loss, finasteride will increase the number of scalp hairs but will not increase the amount of body hair.

Finasteride blocks the action of an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase. This enzyme changes testosterone to another hormone that causes the prostate to grow or hair loss in males. It will increase testosterone levels in the body, which decreases prostate size and increases hair growth on the scalp. The effect of finasteride on the prostate and scalp will only last as long as the medicine is taken. When it is stopped, the prostate begins to grow again and the hair will be lost.

Here is a quick list of some of the most common questions about finasteride.

Hi all. I have noticed my hair loss is getting harder. I’m not sure if it’s the scalp that’s causing it or if there is something else that I should try. I have a lot of sensitive hair, so it can take a lot of effort to remove those areas, even with good hygiene. Any advice on what to do? Thanks for the input.

I’m on finasteride. My hair is thinning, and the follicle needs to work and I don’t want to overdo it by adding too much. I can’t stop using finasteride as a treatment for hair loss. My hair will grow back as long as it’s been used, but I’m not sure if it’s working.

Also, I’ve heard of hair loss treatments that don’t use finasteride, so I’m hoping someone here can tell me if they work or not.

Hi Hair,

I’m going to try finasteride as a hair loss treatment, so I’m going to let you know if you can get this medication. The medication I’ve been using for a little over a year is Minoxidil (Rogaine) and Finasteride (Propecia). I also have a small bottle of Propecia which I’ll take to use in a while.

May 15, 2018, 12:47pm4

I’ve been on it for 3 years. My hair loss has been getting worse but has been getting better. I don’t need to stop using finasteride. I still use Minoxidil (Propecia) but it doesn’t hurt to keep it there, and my hair loss is continuing to get worse. I don’t want to give up on the medication. Also, I just want to see if I can take my minoxidil back.

May 17, 2018, 12:15pm6

You can’t use Propecia to treat hair loss. It’s an oral medication and must be used at least every 3 months. Propecia is an estrogen blocker, so it’s not a big deal.

May 17, 2018, 3:07pm7

I’m on a 5mg daily and I’ve been on it for about 3 years. I have a lot of sensitive hair, so it’s hard to do anything to remove it. I’ve never used a topical finasteride, but I’ve seen that it’s a pretty safe medication to use. It’s a long-term treatment, so if it’s not working, I’ll take it.

May 17, 2018, 3:23pm8

I’ve been on Propecia for about 3 years. I used it for about a year to treat my hair loss. It’s been around for 5 years now. I didn’t want to take any medication I didn’t know was safe. I’ve read that some medications can make hair fall out, but it’s not an easy thing to remove it. I’ve tried to get a prescription from my GP, but I can’t remember how I’d go about it.

May 18, 2018, 7:04pm9

I’m not sure if I need to use Propecia or minoxidil. I’ve been using it for about 3 years. I’ve never used a topical finasteride. But I can use it if I want.
